From Darcy:
I hate hype, but I am purchasing this. I have seen some total crap brought out by over-hyped individuals, that I doubt would ever 'really' work. I was curious about Mr. Turner, so I downloaded the Penguin Live lecture, and was absolutely blown away.
I am an absolute cynic about magic and mentalism. There is a lot of unworkable crap churned out, but I have one word after watching Pete Turner's lecture: In-f*$cking-Spired. I have high hopes for this DVD.
I watched the first half a few weeks ago, and was amazed by the effects he demonstrated. They fooled me more than anything I have seen in a long time. That is nothing in and of itself. Lots of things fool me. The eureka-moments came later.
Tonight I watched the second half, that had almost no effects. It was the greatest magic/mentalism presentation I have ever seen. It was an extremely inspired, articulate and cogent articulation about evoking wonder, magic and beautiful experiences for audiences. It was like watching a heavily tattooed (occasionally foul-mouthed) west-Yorkshire Russell Crowe-looking Aristotle of Mentalism... with the soul of a poet. Truly inspiring stuff. I took waaaay more away from listening to him talk than I did the effects he explained.
I'll never have the brazen balls to do what he does, but the nuggets I mined from the lecture will enrich my performances for a long time!

From Chris
Well - I am getting this DVD from the MagicBox guys real soon and I am really excited about it.
So I read Darcy's observations here. This is enough to send me over to penguin to buy the lecture.
I am going to concur with everything Darcy said - this blew me away!
Totally.
I do not remember being as excited about a magic release EVER!
It is mindblowing and totally unique.
I am only halfway through the first video and I am jumping up and down with excitement.
This guy is amazing.
We are all jaded listening to hyped up nothings in magic - we are all looking for the holy grail of the next great leap - some of the more gullible have given huge amounts of money to magic marketing scams in recent years. The whole magic scene is full of flim-flam and dubious practice - endless pdfs of rehashed material masquerading as the works of various geniuses, overpriced 'limited editions' all backed by a predictable crew of same-old same-olds. Stuff you must have that you find you already do have. A mountain of ebooks and unfulfilled hype. I do not know about you guys, but I am totally sick to the back teeth with it.
But this my friends transcends all of this - it is the REAL thing - no hype, no west coast marketing techniques, no bullshit - this stuff is real, it works and it will blow your thinking right out of the water.
No joke - go get it NOW - It is not often that I recommend something so much without reservation, in fact - never.
But I will say this - the Penguin lecture is THE most amazing thing I have seen in terms of magical instruction - ever!
What the DVD is going to be like god only knows.
GET IT!
simple!
chuck everything else away and get the DVD - and I am basing this on the penguin lecture.
Amazing, awe inspiring stuff.
And now a couple of idiosyncratic observation.
First of all - and I am rarely 'gung-ho' - but I am so glad that Peter is a fellow Brit, and a northerner too! And he seems such a nice, open and down to earth sort. What a chance from all of the puffed up egos that consistently strut before our weary eyes.
By the same token - I am so glad that Magic Box have the exclusive on this one. The guys at MB are simply the best people to deal with, and are by far my favourite magic dealership. I have always supported them, and they have always supported me (which is why their banner is up there - for which they have given a very generous donation). So, good one guys, so glad you have this scoop.
One worry I have is the traditional magicians concern. I am glad that Peter will be earning money from this, he deserves every penny and then some, at the same time, I regret that these methods are 'out there', I really do.
I wince at the thought of the youtube 10yr olds performing this stuff.
I really hope to get Peter to come over here for a Q and A.
The Moon is 100% behind this guy - no hype, but I am going to be pushing this hard.
Chuck away your old mentailist stuff, this genuinely redefines everything!
....I'm a fan!

Watched the lecture, very very interesting. And very interested on what Peter has to say about dual reality in a close-up... I hope I get the money from somewhere...
From Jon Mac
I watched the Penguin lecture, and here's a review from the perspective of a novice: In a nutshell, I agree with all of the above. THIS is why I love magic in the first place (sorry, I use magic in the poetic sense, so no need for any magic vs. mentalism debate ) This lecture is over three hours long and comes with a very detailed 14 page PDF. Ha ha, I doubt any of the YouTube exposers would have the attention span to do any harm, and they probably wouldn't GET a lot of the most important stuff, if you know what I mean. Some of the reviewers on Penguin seem to miss the point, as well.
I will be re-watching this many times, as I'm sure I'll find new things each time. I think Mr. Turner is a perfect example of being yourself and not being afraid to go your own way. He's obviously very passionate and sincerely respects his art. He loves what he does and it shows. His easy-going enthusiasm is contagious. I think he'd be happy to know I found the lecture inspirational as well as extremely informative. I can't help but think "Wow this guy really knows his stuff." And even better, he has a rare ability to impart that knowledge to others in a very useful and helpful way.
I've been reading Annemann lately (from the Learned Pig until I can find a good copy of the original 1944 edition,) and I'll be looking at the effects with a new eye after watching Peter's lecture.
Anyway, I might be easy to impress since I know so little, but that was the most interesting and helpful and moving three hours of magic wisdom I've ever seen. I too, just hope I'll be able to order the DVD before they run out.
